Governor Minner Promotes Delaware Company’s
Efforts to Encourage Healthy Lifestyles

Newark, DE, April 25, 2002 - Governor Ruth Ann Minner encourage employers throughout the region to attend “Women’s Health in the Workplace,” a one-day conference being hosted on May 14 by LLuminari, a Delaware company that uses nationally prominent physicians to encourage healthy lifestyles.
The conference, which is being held during National Women’s Health Week, will take place at Houston Hall, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.

Nationally known physicians and experts will discuss contemporary issues with leaders from businesses, nonprofit and government. Speakers include: LLuminari co-founder, renowned breast cancer expert, and author, Dr. Susan Love; Columbia University professor and author, and Delaware native, Dr. Mehmet Oz; founder of National Black Women’s Health Project Byllye Avery; and Dr. Pam Peeke, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Pew Foundation Scholar in Nutrition and Metabolism, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Medical Expert, NBC Today Show, Author of “Fight Fat After Forty.” Experts from Delaware companies including MBNA, DuPont, and AstraZeneca, along with leaders from government and nonprofits, will be panelists at the conference. Delaware State Personnel Director Lisa Blunt-Bradley, who oversees the human resources department for one of the state’s largest employers, and State Treasurer Jack Markell are among the panelists.

“Delawareans cannot afford to be complacent about their health care,” Gov. Minner said. “Delaware was one of only a few states to pass a Patients’ Bill of Rights last year, but we are also a state that has continued to see drastic increases in our cancer incidence and mortality rates. We are actively working to promote healthy lifestyles and this conference is a natural fit for these initiatives. I encourage Delaware employers to send their leaders and those addressing women’s health needs in the workplace to this conference to learn of new ways to encourage employees to stay healthy.”
Conference topics will include:

  • Weight and the Workplace – how the best companies are already working on
    ways to create healthier cultures;

  • The Sandwich Generation – what employers are doing to reduce absenteeism
    and provide better emotional support;

  • Healthcare Costs – what the leading companies are doing to better balance cost
    and quality;

  • Women’s Health in the Workplace: It’s more than just daycare – what leaders are
    doing to address the special needs of women at work;

  • Working from Home – the new health needs of nine million Americans at home.

LLuminari CEO and co-founder Elizabeth Browning said, "Of the 100 million women 16 and older in the United States, approximately 58 million, are labor force participants. And, women will comprise 47 percent of the labor force by 2005. Women in the workplace have unique health needs. Typically, they care for family members and parents as well as for themselves. Businesses who recognize these needs can create caring cultures that foster employee loyalty while reducing health care costs. The May conference shares how the best companies are addressing the needs of women and those they care for. It also provides leaders of local companies, non-profits and government agencies the opportunity to network across sectors and hear directly from prominent experts who have a more national perspective of the issues."

The cost for the conference is $150.00, which includes breakfast, lunch and a cocktail reception. A discount of 20% is offered to small businesses with fewer than 100 employees, and a special price of $50.00 is being offered to nonprofit organizations and government employees.
