A non-profit contract research organization, the Fraunhofer Center
for Molecular Biotechnology (CMB) emphasizes discovery and development
of processes for making proteins in plants for use in vaccines,
therapeutic proteins or enzymes. Research activities include the
use of synthetic vectors to cause the expression of peptides and
proteins in plants, in addition to protein engineering and high
throughput screening of modified proteins. Currently, CMB is developing
a complete protocol for medium and large-scale production of proteins
in plants, including recovery and purification.
CMB’s research contracts include the development system component
for a diagnostic test to predict juvenile diabetes, sponsored by
the Delaware State Department of Health; human hormone proteins
for a private sponsor; and a Navy contract for preliminary work
on a vaccine.
